Social Media Rules Around the World

A social media ban is not always the same kind of rule. In a democracy it may be presented as child protection; in an authoritarian system it can also become part of control over information.

Countries are trying to protect children online in very different ways. Some ban social media accounts under a certain age. Others make platforms responsible for safer design, age checks or parental tools. In some countries, child protection is also connected to state control and censorship. This map does not simply ask which country is strictest. It asks a better question: who decides what is safe for children online — governments, parents, platforms, or children themselves?

EU-landen hanteren nu nog leeftijden tussen 13 en 16. Moet Europa één leeftijdsgrens kiezen, of ruimte laten per land?
